A Letter to God

Lesson 1 – A Letter to God
Author:  G. L. Fuentes
 ЁЯМ╛ **Summary (Short but Complete)**
Lencho was a poor farmer who lived on the top of a low hill with his family. His house was the only one in the entire valley. He was very hardworking and honest. He depended completely on his fields for his living. One year, his crops needed rain badly. Lencho looked at the sky and hoped for rain. Soon, it started raining, and Lencho became very happy. But within moments, the rain turned into a hailstorm. The hailstones destroyed all his corn fields. Lencho’s heart was filled with sadness and despair. He believed that without his crop, his family would starve. However, Lencho had deep faith in God. He believed that God sees everything and helps those in need. So he decided to write a letter to God. In his letter, he asked God to send him **100 pesos** so that he could sow his field again and feed his family. He addressed the letter simply to **“God”** and posted it at the post office. The postman laughed at first, but the **postmaster**, who was a kind and sympathetic man, was deeply impressed by Lencho’s faith. He decided to help him. He collected money from his employees and contributed some from his own salary. However, the total amount was **less than 100 pesos**. They could collect only about **70 pesos**, which the postmaster put in an envelope and signed it “God.” When Lencho came to the post office the next Sunday, he was not surprised to find the letter from God. But when he counted the money, he became angry. He believed that **God could not make a mistake or deny him what he had asked for**. So, he wrote another letter to God, asking Him to send the **rest of the money**, but not through the **post office**, because he thought that the post office employees had **stolen the remaining amount**.
